Enric Mas triumphed today in the ninth stage of the Vuelta a España, finally wearing the red jersey after a wait filled with emotion. Yesterday, due to Tadej Pogacar's withdrawal, Mas had become the leader of the general classification, but out of respect for his fallen rival, he had not wanted to wear the symbol of the race during the awards ceremony. Today, however, the day was different and after triumphing at Alto De Aitana, the Movistar rider celebrated his victory with the red jersey on his shoulders.

"Now I understand what Tadej feels when he wins with the leader's jersey" said an emotional Mas, dedicating a special thought to his family and the team that supported him on this journey. "I think we've been fantastic in everything, from yesterday afternoon until now. The team did superb work; we were incredibly calm throughout and managed the situation very, very well. I felt great at the end. Sincere thanks go to our sporting directors, who guided us from the team car at every moment, and that's also why I managed to win."

Mas has experienced difficult moments in his career, but seems to have left them behind, returning to victory in his home race. "This is perhaps the best moment of my career - he stated - But I want to be cautious, because I've taken many hard blows in my career, and we must move forward day by day. I think I'm experiencing the best sensations."

The victory also has a special meaning for Mas, who had the opportunity to drop high-caliber riders like Roglic and Félix Gall. The finale, however, was a two-man duel between the Spaniard and British rider Oscar Onley. "I'm as emotional as a child and it's been that way from the start, and being able to win with that jersey, I assure you, is a truly special feeling."

With this victory, Mas has confirmed himself as one of the main protagonists of the Vuelta, and his determination and team support could lead him to experience other days as a protagonist during the competition.

Tomorrow will be a rest day and the general classification closes with Enric Mas leading, followed by Primoz Roglic at 1'18", Felix Gall at 1'39" and Onley at 2'20".
