Campania is returning to having its professional cycling race, and it's doing so in grand style: with the concrete commitment of the President of the region Roberto Fico, the Sports Assessor Fiorella Zabatta and the Mayor of Naples Gaetano Manfredi, with the support of the regional cycling federation committee chaired by Umberto Perna; with entry into the UCI calendar (category 1.1) and the prestigious Coppa Italia delle Regioni, curated by the Professional Cycling League; with the organization entrusted to the company Terenzi Sport Eventi, which in 2021 brought back to the capital the historic Gran Premio della Liberazione and this year will create the Gran Premio del Lazio on September 19 and the Giro di Campania on Sunday the 20th.
The route of the Campania race will be approximately two hundred kilometers long and will touch all five provinces: Caserta, Benevento, Avellino, Salerno and Naples. Right at the entrance to the Metropolitan City of the capital, there will be the great climb of the day: the legendary Agerola, which in 1955 saw Fausto Coppi drop all his opponents, Fiorenzo Magni first and foremost, securing his second consecutive victory in the Giro di Campania. Besides Coppi, other champions boast two wins in the record book: from Bartali to Bitossi to Saronni and Moser. The record belongs instead to Learco Guerra and his hat-trick achieved in the Thirties, when the race (created in 1911 by the newspaper Il Mattino) transformed from a stage competition to a one-day race.
Only four times has the Giro di Campania not been won by an Italian: the Belgian De Vlaeminck's victory stands out in 1984, while the last edition held so far, in 2001, saw the Russian (but Italian by adoption) Dmitri Konychev prevail in a splendid sprint at the Royal Palace of Caserta. In exactly one month, instead, the royal residence designed by the Vanvitelli dynasty will be the starting point of the 64th Giro di Campania. The finish will be placed in the heart of Naples, at Piazza del Plebiscito, after touching some of the most iconic places in this territory and our country.
As Claudio Terenzi assures, "a full-fledged cycling celebration is in prospect: the complete crossing of a beautiful region and an uncertain tug-of-war between climbers and sprinters. It will be the worthy culmination of a week dedicated to Central-Southern Italy, with the Trofeo Matteotti in Pescara, the Giro d'Abruzzo, the Gran Premio del Lazio (organized by us) and indeed the rebirth of the Giro di Campania, for which we are and remain honored to have been entrusted. Special thanks to all the institutional leaders who believed in this project. We look forward to seeing you on September 20th!"
Thus the Assessor Fiorella Zabatta: "I am particularly pleased to have contributed to bringing back the Giro di Campania after 25 years. It is an event that belongs to the history and sporting tradition of our region and which today comes back to life by crossing our territories and meeting our communities. Cycling has a special power: it brings sport to the streets, among the people, transforming the places of everyday life into a great celebration. Seeing the Giro depart from the Royal Palace of Caserta and arrive in the heart of Naples, crossing all five provinces, is an emotion and, for me, a source of great pride. I am certain that this will be the beginning of a new, long history for the Giro di Campania".
