Swatt Club celebrates at the end of the first half-stage of the Sibiu Tour 2026. The first test of the inaugural day of the Romanian race was indeed conquered by Matias Malmberg who, attacking his fellow breakaway companions 1.2 kilometers from the finish line, resisted the peloton's comeback, thus securing the first professional victory of his career.
Second place went to Danny van Poppel (Red Bull BORA hansgrohe) who, in the sprint, outpaced the main group ahead of his teammate Davide Donati, Zétény Szijártó (Team United Shipping), Riley Pickrell (Modern Adventure Pro Cycling), Benjamin Boos (REMBE | rad-net) and an impressive Simone Buda (Solme - Olmo - Arvedi), in seventh place.
THE RACE
After recording the non-start of Victor Martinez (MENtoRISE Teem CCN) due to the aftermath of a crash suffered yesterday during training, the stage starts immediately with a crash in the very first kilometers involving, among others, Ivo Oliveira (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Horea-Stefan Precup (Romania). Shortly after, the day's breakaway forms, composed of Philip Heijnen (Azerion-Villa-Valkenburg), Matias Malmberg (Swatt Club), Zétény Szijártó (Team United Shipping), Iustin-Ioan Vaidian (MENtoRISE Teem CCN), Adam Lewis (APS Pro Cycling by Team Cadence Cyclery), Iben Rommelaere (Tartelletto-Isorex) and Bastian Dietl (Run & Race - Solarpur) who quickly manage to build a 1'50" gap between themselves and the peloton.
After tackling the first of three passages over the Calugaru climb (first Vaidian) and the intermediate sprint at Orlat (won by Rommelaere over Malmberg), the race proceeds smoothly without incident (apart from an unexpected crossing of the road by a flock of sheep) until the second ascent towards Calugaru where this time Rommelaere is first over the top. The subsequent descent brings no changes to the situation with the breakaway leaders continuing to lead by just over a minute on the peloton, and with this gap they approach the final climb of the day where Dietl and Heijnen immediately lose contact while Rommelaere, taking with his umpteenth first place the last points available, secures the first best climber's jersey.
Behind, after this climb and the subsequent descent, the peloton accelerates decisively to reel in the attackers still out front, an operation that only partially succeeds because, attacking 1200 meters from the finish against his fellow breakaway companions, Malmberg remains alone at the front and, superbly resisting the chase of his pursuers, wins solo, outwitting all the sprinters in the race.
Thus both van Poppel and Donati have to settle for secondary positions in a stage that on paper saw them as the main favorites but which instead saw them finish behind the twenty-five-year-old Dane who, thanks to this triumph (his second of the season after the final stage of the Olympia's Tour), has moved to the top of the general classification.
This leadership, however, will be challenged very soon as at 18:00 local time the second half-stage of the day will start, namely the 3.2-kilometer individual time trial that could give a new and different shape to the standings.
