Drama on the roads of the Giro d'Italia: a 70-year-old who was cycling along the climb from Aviano to Piancavallo, from where he would have watched the passage of today's stage – Saturday, May 30th – of the Corsa Rosa, died in hospital following a sudden medical emergency that struck him while he was pedaling on the ascent that the riders will face twice during the course of the stage.

The alarm was raised during the morning: rescue operations were immediately deployed, which also have a medical station located after the finish line, set at Piancavallo following the start from Gemona del Friuli.

The 70-year-old amateur cyclist's condition appeared extremely critical from the start: the man, who collapsed suddenly to the ground, was resuscitated for an extended period at the scene and then transported to Pordenone hospital, where however he passed away shortly after his arrival.

The rescue operations inevitably caused a complete traffic blockade with tens of thousands of people who were making their way to the climb to watch the passage of the Giro.

Long queues and delays formed along the climb, which was literally stormed by enthusiasts.
