2021 Giro winner Egan Bernal and Thymen Arensman will lead Netcompany INEOS at this year's Giro d'Italia, marking the team's debut in a Grand Tour with its new identity.
The Giro represents the competitive debut of Netcompany INEOS, following the ambitious Danish technology company's entry as co-title partner at the end of April. The team will present itself at the Grand Départ with a renewed kit, testament to Netcompany's entry into the professional group and the beginning of a new chapter for the team.
Arensman and Bernal will be the leaders for the general classification and will be supported by a versatile and highly experienced squad. The Dutch rider arrives in excellent form following the podium finish he secured at the Tour of the Alps, while Colombian national champion Bernal recently achieved an excellent fifth place at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Geraint Thomas, Sport Director, stated: «For us at Netcompany INEOS team, a new chapter is opening and the Giro d'Italia seems like the ideal place to begin it. We have two capable leaders for the general classification, Thymen and Egan, who have already achieved excellent results at the Giro. They are in excellent form and highly motivated to race with determination and give their best. We have a strong team that can be competitive on all types of terrain. We will try to race aggressively and achieve the maximum possible. The long individual time trial is an important objective for us and will also be crucial for the general classification. The team has started strongly, so we aim to maintain this momentum. At the Giro anything can happen: the weather is often a determining factor and the terrain also makes the race difficult, especially with a final week that is always extremely demanding. Things can change rapidly, so it is essential to be flexible and ready to face any situation».
Thymen Arensman adds: «I arrive at the Giro in excellent form and I am truly motivated for this race. Sharing the leadership with Egan gives us strength and we have a team that can support us throughout the race. For me it's about being consistent, staying focused every day and seizing opportunities when they present themselves».
Egan Bernal confirms: «The Giro is always a special race for me and I am excited to race it again, and with this group of riders. I feel calm, well prepared and motivated to be competitive again. We have a strong group and this gives us confidence, so we will race together and aim to be among the top finishers in the general classification».
Italian star Filippo Ganna, a seven-time stage winner at the Giro, will target the individual time trial on the tenth stage, while also playing a key support role and maintaining the freedom to target objective stages.
«The Giro is always incredibly special for me, and a great source of pride for every Italian. I am truly happy about the opportunity that the individual time trial in Tuscany offers me to aim for victory, and there is also a stage finish near my parents' home, which will be very special. We have clear ambitions for the general classification and I will give my best to support them, also seizing opportunities when they present themselves».
The lineup is completed by Jack Haig, Magnus Sheffield, Embret Svestad-Bårdsen, Connor Swift and Ben Turner: riders who combine proven experience in Grand Tours with emerging talent and the versatility necessary to set the pace of the race at key moments.
Haig brings leadership and climbing depth, with the ability to provide support on decisive stages, while Sheffield adds all-around energy and ambition. Svestad-Bårdsen continues his growth as a promising complete rider, with Swift in the road captain role. Turner, who secured his first Grand Tour stage victory at the Vuelta last year, completes the group and is capable of playing multiple roles, also able to compete in flat finishes.
