Remco Evenepoel by winning the Amstel Gold Race has secured his seventh individual victory of 2026 and has become the rider with the most wins of the season. The Belgian champion improved on last year's third place and allowed Belgium to achieve the 15th triumph in the history of the Dutch race. The last one in 2021 was obtained by Wout Van Aert.
Evenepoel is the 48th rider to write his name in the Amstel Gold Race's roll of honour, out of 60 editions held so far. Second podium finishes also for Mattias Skjelmose and Benoit Cosnefroy. The Dane dropped one place compared to last year's victory, while the Frenchman returned to the spotlight four years after his second-place finish in 2022 (behind Polish rider Michal Kwiatkowski).
Italy was in the spotlight thanks to Marco Frigo's strong performance, but remained off the podium for the seventh consecutive time. The last significant Italian result remains the 3rd place achieved in 2018 by Enrico Gasparotto, who also authored the seventh and final Italian victory in the history of the Amstel Gold Race, in 2016.
On Wednesday, the Flèche Wallonne will be held, a race that has smiled upon Italy 18 times, but Italian cycling has not won it since 2009, the year of Davide Rebellin's outstanding hat-trick.
