Concern and worry today following a serious crash during the first stage of the Coppi & Bartali, involving 22-year-old Mexican rider Michael Zarate, a member of Marco Bellini's Petrolike team. Transported in critical condition to the hospital in Alba, the rider - after being stabilized and placed in a medically induced coma - was transferred to the Maxillofacial Surgery unit at Santa Croce and Carle Hospital in Cuneo, a specialized facility directed by Dr. Marco Bernardi, focused on treating conditions of the face, mouth and jaw, given the injuries sustained by the young rider. Zarate is clearly in the intensive care unit at this stage, but is not in life-threatening condition.
