A thrilling finale at the Volta Catalunya where Magnus Cort won the second stage in a sprint. It was far from a straightforward victory for the Uno-X Mobility athlete, as the peloton had to contend with Liam Slock (Lotto Intermarchè), one of the day's breakaway riders who was only caught in the final kilometre. Second place went to Noa Isidore (Decathlon CMA CGM Team). Once again, a solid performance from the Italian riders, with Francesco Busatto (Alpecin-Premier Tech) and Alberto Dainese (Soudal Quick-Step) finishing in third and fifth position.
THE RACE. The second day of racing in Catalonia presented no major mountains to climb, but the menu offered a nervous and highly eventful stage. The 167.4 km route from Figueres to Banyoles featured an elevation gain of just over 2,000 metres, with the final climb finishing 30 km from the finish line.
The early phases of the race were animated by an attack from five riders: Liam Slock and Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto Intermarchè), Julen Arriolabengoa (Caja Rural Seguros RGA), Diego Uriarte (Equipo Kern Pharma) and Samuel Fernandez (Euskaltel Euskadi) managed to build an advantage of up to 3 minutes. Throughout the day, the peloton was kept under control by NSN Cycling Team, EF Education-EasyPost and Soudal Quick-Step.
The race ignited 20 km from the finish when Slock and Veistroffer, the two Lotto Intermarchè teammates in the breakaway, launched a powerful acceleration and remained alone at the front. The two teammates worked in perfect harmony, managing to resist the chase from the peloton led by NSN Cycling Team. Slock's dreams of glory were shattered in the final kilometre when he was caught by the bunch, now ready for the sprint.
In the general classification, leveraging the placings achieved, Dorian Godon maintained the leader's jersey. Tomorrow the Volta a Catalunya will tackle the Mont Roig del Camp - Vila Seca stage of 159.5 km. The finish is suited to fast men, but during the day three categorized climbs will be tackled that could cause difficulties for many riders in the bunch.
