These are not exactly peaceful hours for Remco Evenepoel. Having flown to Teide at the beginning of March to conduct an altitude training camp, the Belgian from Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe is currently stranded on the Canary Islands volcano due to bad weather, and given the atmospheric conditions, his participation in the upcoming Volta a Catalunya is becoming decidedly uncertain.
As the three-time World Time Trial Champion has made known through his social media channels, the heavy snowfall that has fallen in recent hours in the National Park area has made travel impossible, forcing him and his wife Oumaima Rayane to extend their stay in the Spanish archipelago longer than they had planned.
"We're stuck up on teide for the 2nd day because of the snow ... no one can go up or down" the twenty-six-year-old from Aalst announced through his accounts. "We're supposed to fly to barcelona tomorrow (for the race) but not sure we'll make it" Evenepoel clarified, not hiding his concern about his upcoming travel plans.
We will see if, with an improvement in the weather, the Belgian will finally manage to leave Tenerife and arrive in time in Catalonia where he should, the conditional is mandatory in this case, take part in his sixth race of the season, the first after the UAE Tour in February in which, despite finishing first in the Hudayriyat Island time trial, he did not impress as he had done in the Spanish races at the very beginning of the season.
