The sea air is still present with the start set in Camaiore and through Montemagno the riders reach Pisa first and then the Livorno area before leaving the coast near Cecina and continuing inland towards Pomarance where, at km 134, the intermediate sprint is located.
The race then climbs from the Cerreto road which features double-digit gradient sections: the race continues with the climb of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina (where at km 148.3 the first categorized climb of the day is placed) and a sequence of ups and downs that leads to the 5.3 km gravel section at the gates of San Gimignano. This is a gravel road predominantly uphill with some very steep sections.
And uphill is also the finish in the town center with a final short ramp at 14% at the entrance to San Gimignano, so much so that the finish line will also be valid as the Mountain Prize.
