Remco Evenepoel has achieved his goal and yesterday, in the queen stage of the Volta Comunitat Valenciana, he won and donned the race leader's jersey. The Belgian dressed in yellow and his intention now is to return home with this new victory. Evenepoel is on his seventh day of racing in 2026, with already 5 victories, and this evening, that number could rise.
"We followed our plan perfectly. First of all, my teammates rode at the front for a long time. Arne really did an incredible job and I thank him". Arne Marit is one of Evenepoel's best friends and this year, they both race with the colors of Red Bull - Bora hansgrohe.
"Keeping the time gap under control was not easy at all. And then there's the fact that we received no help, but we know that this would have been quite normal. But the most beautiful thing was finishing the race with every teammate doing their job until the end. It's truly the best team a rider could wish for."
Evenepoel had hoped to make a difference last Thursday during the individual time trial, but unfortunately due to wind, the stage was neutralized and the Belgian could not distance his rivals as he had planned.
"It's a great feeling to have won like this. Of course, I missed the time trial difference, but I also had all the support I could desire and that they could give me. I think the secret of this team lies in the fact that we can really take advantage of being able to win anywhere. It's simply fantastic to race at this level against these rivals with such a team, and everyone is really good."
Remco attacked extremely confidently, but in the last kilometer, he turned around a couple of times to check the situation.
"I was never worried, I simply didn't know anything about the gaps. The motorcycle often positioned itself next to me, but they never mentioned the time differences and this is a bit of a problem. I think even in the team car they didn't have a perfect overview. So I worked hard to resist. We were three riders at the end. It was really difficult for me, alone, against the wind. We can say that the final victory is practically assured, with today's short stage. But I know I must remain fully concentrated until I reach the top and then I can descend calmly."
The Belgian has had a truly incredible start to the season and has repeatedly said he feels physically well. "Yes, I feel really good and I think these results come from a positive winter and having an incredible team that works to ensure you lack nothing, and of course my teammates, who every time do an amazing job."
