Contrary to what usually happens in these circumstances, Decathlon CMA CGM took advantage of its media day to reveal not only the first races of its main riders but also those of almost all other riders in its roster.
Left out of the cumulative announcement made by the French team in recent hours were only Jordan Labrosse and the debilitated Olav Kooij, whose schedule will likely be revised after the Dutchman (originally expected to debut at UAE Tour) has definitively overcome the virus that has affected him in recent days.
For ten of the remaining twenty-six athletes, however, the team led by Dominique Serieys did not limit itself to communicating debut races but also unveiled subsequent season commitments. This is particularly true for classics men like Tiesj Benoot and Daan Hoole, Tobias Andresen, and a stage race prospect like Matthew Riccitello, all of whom arrived at Decathlon during the last transfer window.
The Belgian ex-Visma Lease a Bike, after showcasing his new colors at Volta ao Algarve, will continue his season by participating in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, E3 Saxo Classic, Gent-Wevelgem, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Ronde van Vlaanderen, Flèche Wallonne, Liège–Bastogne–Liège, Tour Auvergne Rhône Alpes and Tour de France, a race in which for the fourth time after Kuurne, Gent, and Ronde he will share team space with Hoole.
The latter will arrive at the Grand Boucle after racing UAE Tour, Paris-Nice, Ronde van Brugge and Paris–Roubaix, a Monument that will not see Tobias Lund Andresen as a protagonist, who will instead be directed (after the trio of Australian races Tour Down Under, Surf Coast Classic and Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean) to Tirreno-Adriatico, Dwars Door Vlaanderen and then Giro d'Italia.
Speaking of multi-day races, these will undoubtedly be Riccitello's bread and butter, who will arrive at the Vuelta España in August after participating in 5 stage races (Tour de La Provence, Volta ao Algarve, Volta Catalunya, Itzulia Basque Country and Tour Auvergne Rhône Alpes) and only two classics (Faun-Ardèche Classic and San Sebastian).
The well-attended early August event in the Basque Country will also see talented Leo Bisiaux and Felix Gall engaged, who will then move together to Vuelta a Burgos and Vuelta España. In the first months of the year, however, the young French rider and the twenty-seven-year-old Austrian will follow different paths: the former will tackle Cyclocross Worlds, Itzulia Basque Country, Classic Grand Besançon, Tour du Jura, Eschborn-Frankfurt and Tour Auvergne Rhône Alpes; the latter with UAE Tour, Tirreno-Adriatico, Volta Catalunya and Giro d'Italia.
Unlike them, Paul Lapeira, Stefan Bissegger and the highly anticipated Paul Seixas will have a calendar much more focused on classics. While the Swiss time trialist, excluding UAE Tour and Paris-Nice, will focus his efforts on Flemish races like Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, E3 Saxo Classic, Gent-Wevelgem, Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix, the two French riders will concentrate more on the Ardennes, racing together at Arrow and Liège while varying their program before and after these appointments: Lapeira will be at GP la Marseillaise, Étoile de Bessèges, Classic Var, Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, Strade Bianche, Itzulia Basque Country, Amstel Gold Race, Eschborn-Frankfurt and Tour de Suisse, while the European road bronze medalist will tackle Volta ao Algarve, Faun-Ardèche Classic, Strade Bianche and Itzulia Basque Country in what appears to be a balanced mix of classics and stage races.
The same can be said about the calendar of Aurelien Paret-Peintre, who until June will alternate single-day efforts with week-long races, as the twenty-nine-year-old from Annemasse will pin on his number for Tour de La Provence, Classic Var, Tour des Alpes-Maritimes, Paris-Nice, Milan-San Remo, Itzulia Basque Country, Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne, Liège–Bastogne–Liège and Tour Auvergne Rhône Alpes.
