TOUR OF GUANGXI, MAGNIER SERVES THE POKER: IN JINCHENGJIANG BITTNER AND MEEUS DEFEATED. PASQUALON 6TH

As happened in Croatia and Slovakia in recent weeks, the poker of victories by Paul Magnier becomes a reality at the Tour of Guangxi. With an irresistible seated sprint, the French sprinter imposed his signature for the fourth time in the short Chinese stage race, beating Pavel Bittner (Team Picnic PostNL) and Jordi Meeus (Red Bull BORA hansgrohe) at the finish line. By doing so, the native of Laredo, victorious thirteen times in the last 16 days of racing and twenty-third time overall this season, increased his margin in the general classification, bringing his lead to 26 seconds over Meeus and 28 over Bittner. However, tomorrow, with the only mountain finish of the race scheduled, his primacy will likely pass to someone else. THE CHRONICLE. Immediately after the start from Bama, the polka dot jersey Simon Guglielmi (Arkéa - B&B Hotels) and Logan Currie (Lotto) launch an attack. The two are pursued and then caught by Michael Leonard (Ineos Grenadiers) and Stan Dewulf (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team) at the foot of the first mountain grand prix of the day, where Juan Pedro Lopez (Lidl-Trek) and Michael Valgren (EF Education Easypost) also break away from behind. It is on the descent, however, that the two counter-attackers manage to reach the head of the race and form a six-man group that, at the entrance of the second climb of the day, gains a 3'40" advantage over the peloton. Here, while Florian Kajamini (XDS-Astana) and Alexey Lutsenko (Israel-Premier Tech) abandon the race, bringing the number of riders still racing to 109, XDS-Astana, Soudal Quick-Step, and Visma Lease a Bike take control of the situation. The pace set by these teams ensures that the margin of the six leaders remains under 5 minutes, allowing the breakaway to claim both mountain grand prix points (won respectively by Guglielmi and Dewulf) and the time bonuses at the Donglan intermediate sprint (1st Leonard ahead of Dewulf and Valgren). At this point, with a strong push from UAE Team Emirates-XRG riders, the peloton accelerates violently, significantly reducing the gap to the attack on the fourth and final climb of the day. At the top of this climb, the breakaway (which by then had been reduced to 5 riders after Lopez raised the white flag) has just 45 seconds of margin, an insufficient gap to prevent the group from catching up in the last thirty kilometers. The group indeed reabsorbs Dewulf and Craps, the last to give up, just before the second intermediate sprint of the day. Won by Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) ahead of Paul Double (Jayco-AlUla), the situation remains very tense with Niklas Behrens (Team Visma Lease a Bike) trying to shake things up by breaking away just before the -10 km to the finish. However, the young German's action lasts only a few kilometers before the high-speed group catches him and propels towards another compact sprint that, in the end, once again goes to the unstoppable Paul Magnier. Behind him, Bittner, Meeus, Penhoët, Gaviria, and Pasqualon in order are forced to settle for another consolation placement and admire yet another achievement by a rider who is writing and will soon write other pages of history.
