Luciano Buonfiglio is the new president of CONI. Seventy-four years old, having led the Italian Canoe and Kayak Federation for 20 years, he was elected president of CONI for the 2025-2028 four-year period in the first ballot of the national electoral council of the Olympic committee. He obtained 47 preferences (41 were needed in the first round) out of 81, beating Luca Pancalli who received 34 preferences.
The new leader, in the brief speech delivered immediately after the election, besides thanking everyone, wanted to pay tribute to the other strong candidate, Luca Pancalli, emphasizing "the fairness of the other competitor. To him goes my most affectionate greeting. President Malagò, first of all a greeting and a thank you for these 12 years. I cannot fail to highlight the importance of the IOC members who are here, they are an added value for our sports movement. This is not the time for words, facts await us. We will elect a board because there is a great change, vote with your brain before your heart".
Buonfiglio also announced the intention to intensify and enrich relations with the Government and among the first to congratulate him was Andrea Abodi, Minister of Sports. "Congratulations to President Buonfiglio, he takes over from outgoing President Giovanni Malagò whom I thank for his intense and fruitful twelve years leading a winning CONI. To him I wish good work and assure immediate and full collaboration with the aim of improving efficiency and utility, not only of the entity, but of the entire Italian sports system".
