A surveying student at the Gioberti Technical Institute in Asti, Capello played soccer as a midfielder for the Asti team and then for Canelli. After ten years of championships, he got tired of kicking a ball, and together with his father Riccardo (a surveyor), he started cycling as a touring cyclist. He made his debut among first-year juniors (15 years old) with Pedale Sanmaurese. His mother Domenica works in the regional ULP. He has a sister, Elena, who practices track and field.
