Lorena Wiebes celebrates her 104th career victory at the end of the first edition of the Copenhagen Sprint, a 151-kilometer race starting from Roskilde and ending in the center of the Danish capital. The SD Worx Protime athlete, current European champion, crossed the finish line ahead of Elisa Balsamo from Lidl Trek and Chiara Consonni, who brought CANYON//SRAM zondacrypto to the third step of the podium, outsprinting Charlotte Kool with a burst of energy. Sofia Bertizzolo completed the top 10 of the day.
The final kilometers were marked by a crash that involved several athletes and split the peloton: at a turn leading to a cobblestone section, around thirty riders went down, adding to another group crash that occurred about seventy kilometers from the finish line.
Wiebes herself, during the post-race interview, called for more attention to safety: "Winning is great and the atmosphere in downtown Copenhagen is beautiful, with lots of people cheering, but I must say the course was perhaps a bit too dangerous. Traffic dividers were sometimes not clearly marked. I heard the crash behind me in the finale, and we had another crash where we lost Blaka Vas, which forced us to reorganize our train. In the end, it went well, but we hope that in the future the UCI will care more about our safety."
