Quinn Simmons secures the winning breakaway in the third stage of the Tour de Suisse, the Aarau - Heiden 195.6 km route. The American from Lidl Trek finished 18 seconds ahead of a group led by Joao Almeida, with Oscar Onley in third place and Romain Gregoire - who retains the leader's jersey - in fourth.
The US champion was a protagonist from the very first kilometers of the race, joining a six-rider breakaway: with him were Belgian Emiel Vestrynge from Alpecin Deceuninck, Frenchman Nans Peters from Decathlon AG2r, Italian Samuele Battistella, British rider Max Walker from EF Education Easypost, and another Belgian, Brent Van Moer from Lotto.
Walker was the first to drop out, with 38 kilometers remaining, followed by Peters just as Simmons was increasing the pace. With 20 kilometers to go, the American attacked and left his breakaway companions, launching into a brilliant solo action while behind him, the group of top riders dispersed their energy in a myriad of personal attacks that came to nothing.
And tomorrow the Tour of Switzerland arrives... in Italy: the fourth stage will conclude in Piuro after the long climb/descent of the Spluga Pass.
