Avezzano will host the upcoming UEC European Gravel Championships, scheduled for September 21, 2025. The UEC Board assigned the event to the location in the heart of the Abruzzo Region during a meeting held yesterday. A choice that combines the beauty of a territory rich in nature and culture with the extraordinary potential of a discipline in full growth, capable of involving not only the best elite athletes of the continent, but also hundreds of amateurs and enthusiasts.
Enrico Della Casa, President of the Union Européenne de Cyclisme, explains: "Avezzano and Abruzzo will welcome a mass event with a strong impact, not only sporting but also social and tourist. The European Gravel Championships represent a winning formula that combines high-level competition with popular participation: elite athletes, amateurs, families, tourists, all together in a weekend that celebrates sport and territory discovery. Gravel is much more than a trend: it's a different way of experiencing cycling, immersed in landscapes, along trails, villages, parks, and secondary roads. And it's precisely this vision that made Avezzano and its territory the ideal setting for an event that promises great appeal. In recent years, Abruzzo has already demonstrated its organizational and landscape value by hosting major cycling events and will again be a great protagonist with the 2029 European Road Championships. Thanks to the Italian Cycling Federation, President Cordiano Dagnoni, and the Organizing Committee for their commitment and sharing of our projects."
Mario Quaglieri, Sports and Budget Councilor of the Abruzzo Region, adds: "The 2025 European Gravel Championship represents a unique opportunity for us, a chance we seized to showcase the beauty of our territory. We are certain that the over 1500 athletes, technicians, and fans who will come to us for this event will be impressed by Abruzzo. I thank UEC President Enrico Della Casa and FCI President Cordiano Dagnoni for choosing Abruzzo and giving us their trust. Thanks to the organizing committee team and, of course, the Municipality of Avezzano. This territory is particularly connected to cycling: in Trasacco not long ago we welcomed Tirreno-Adriatico, last year a Giro d'Italia stage started from Avezzano. And from here came Vito Taccone, one of the greatest in the history of Abruzzo cycling and beyond. For us, the September event is also a preview of the absolute European road championship in 2029. Surely Abruzzo is a region that knows how to embrace sport and great cycling. We look forward to seeing you in September for the gravel European championship."
