Three days before its scheduled event, the Asd Fausto Coppi, led by President Andrea Borghini, presented the 36th edition of the Marble Industries Grand Prix, an international event set for Sunday, May 11th in Marina di Carrara, as has been the case in recent years, while awaiting a return to the historic center of Carrara for the race's start and finish. Authorities, personalities, and officials gathered for the evening at the "Mairo" in Marina di Massa. The Carrara prefect Dr. Guido Aprea, the police chiefs of Massa, Bianca Venezia, and Pisa, Raffaele Gargiulo, Carrara municipal councilors Lara Benfatto and Elena Guadagni, national FCI councilor Laura Puccetti, National Technical Structure President Fabrizio Bontempi, Audit Committee President Simone Mannelli, international commissioner Gianluca Crocetti, and the complete Massa Carrara Provincial Committee with President Maria Pardini, Turba, Natucci, and Tabarracci, and Alessio Baudone, a member of the National Safety and Race Directors Commission.
Hosting the event, alongside President Andrea Borghini, were his father Giorgio, a historic manager of Fausto Coppi and this race, former professional Fabrizio Convalle (race director), and Mario Rossi, the main sponsor with his company Il Fiorino Marmi, a leader in the stone sector. Sunday promises another great cycling day with 32 teams at the start for 168 athletes, including about ten Continental teams, an equal number of foreign national and club teams, and all the other prominent formations.
"We regret - Convalle said - having to turn down numerous societies, but we couldn't do otherwise. Regarding the route, with ongoing work in the Marina di Carrara area and a landslide in the Bedizzano zone, we had to modify the course, which remains challenging with 4 'low' laps all on flat terrain and 4 'high' laps with the climb towards Ponti di Vara and the majestic marble quarries. The finish after 180 kilometers will be at Piazza Menconi in Marina di Carrara."
Last year's winner was the Versilia native Tommaso Dati, absent this time having moved to the elite category. Among recent winners, we also recall Australian Michael Storer, recent winner of the Tour of the Alps, one of the most anticipated riders in the Giro d'Italia starting today from Albania. The Marble Industries Grand Prix will start at 1:30 PM, with the finish expected shortly after 5:30 PM.
