With his crystal-clear talent, Jarno Widar triumphs in the Liège-Bastogne-Liège under 23. The Belgian from Lotto Development is the magnificent winner of the youth Ardennes classic, which concluded in Blegny after 174 kilometers. Widar conquers Liège by anticipating the Dutchman Senna Remijn (Alpecin Deceuninck Development) and our Simone Gualdi (Wanty NIPPO ReUz), who was a protagonist along with Finn in an excellent performance.
But the day's star is undoubtedly Widar. The 19-year-old from Alken in the Flemish province of Limburg, Belgium, raced aggressively without too much calculation. One, two, three, four attacks, with the last and decisive one coming 1000 meters from the finish. Praise is also due to Gualdi and young Lorenzo Mark Finn, born in 2006 like Remijn and Pericas (along with the 2005 Decomble, who finished fourth), who together with the Italians raced on the tough Ardennes terrain.
Widar raced in the style of Pogačar, attacking repeatedly and believing in success until the end. He's someone who never gives up, and should be taken as a benchmark. Gualdi performed brilliantly, an athlete to follow with interest, who today demonstrated with his third place that he has ample room for improvement. The same applies to Finn, who finished fifth. No Italian team at the start, which has now become standard practice.
