The third and final day of the Cyclocross World Championships in Lievin, France, crowns the Italian Mattia Agostinacchio. The Valle d'Aosta rider is the new junior world champion. An Italian triumph completed by the fantastic bronze medal of Filippo Grigolini (first year in the category) who delivered an exceptional performance. Italy shines with a great Agostinacchio who, after the European title, now takes the world title, thoroughly deserved, conquered ahead of home rider Bruyere Joumard (silver), a worthy rival of our athlete. Third place and bronze medal for Grigolini, a first-year rider who raced an truly amazing race. Agostinacchio succeeds another Italian, Stefano Viezzi, in the roll of honor.
A crazy race with continuous scene changes, from Agostinacchio's lead to that of the Spanish rider Noval, from the French Bruyere Joumard back to Agostinacchio, who in the last lap returns to the wheels of the Frenchman before taking flight towards a tricolor triumph.
For the Fas Airport Services-Guerciotti-Premac team, the title won by Agostinacchio is the eleventh world championship. In the past, the team had different names, though always with Paolo Guerciotti's company as its soul. Two of the previous World Championships were won by the Milan team thanks to Vito Di Tano in 1979 in Saccolongo and 1986 in Lembeek. Team patron Paolo Guerciotti today in Liévin reproduced the same joy as in Saccolongo and Lembeek: he was the first to emotionally embrace the mud-covered Mattia Agostinacchio. And also in 1997 in Munich, on February 2nd, the team had celebrated a World Championship victory with Daniele Pontoni.
Mattia above all beat misfortune: "He fell twice - emphasizes Alessandro Guerciotti, team manager of Fas Airport Services Guerciotti Premac - he also had a puncture and in the second part of the race had a broken shoe; he proved to be at 110% fitness. Before the bell that signals the start of the last lap - specifies Alessandro Guerciotti - Mattia was 14" behind Bruyere Joumard. Agostinacchio's comeback was crazy, incredible. In the space of a lap, with his right shoe broken, he caught up with Bruyere Joumard and distanced him by another 12 seconds. A beautiful feat".
Agostinacchio crossed the finish line wheelying in motocross style. Clearly he learned from his sports director Luca Bramati, who as a rider would cross the finish line wheelying when he won.
"Mattia's world title - continues Alessandro Guerciotti - is the result of great planning by our team. The Fas Airport Services Guerciotti Premac staff, sponsors, mechanics, masseurs worked to ensure Mattia high-level international activity this season". In fact, the Guerciotti team didn't just make the athlete available for World Cup tests with the National Team. They also took him to compete in races where the World Cup was only valid for elite and the junior category was a side event, under our team's banner. Same for various Superprestige events where Mattia always raced for Fas Airport Services Guerciotti Premac. Now we hope that our team's great victories will continue: we hope we don't have to wait another 28 years before celebrating another world jersey. We hope this for Italian cycling, which in the junior race showed it is alive with Grigolini's 3rd place and Pezzo Rosola's great performance".
