MIKEL LANDA RETURNS TO THE GIRO: «THE PINK RACE HAS A SPECIAL PLACE IN MY HEART»

One of the most consistent Grand Tour riders on this side of the century, with a total of 10 top-ten finishes in 22 participations, Mikel Landa will return to the Giro d'Italia this season, three years after his previous experience.

The experienced Basque rider had an excellent first season with Soudal Quick-Step last year, finishing among the top five at the Tour de France while serving Remco Evenepoel and eighth at his home Grand Tour, the Vuelta a España. In addition to these results, Mikel finished second in Catalonia – his best result in six participations – and entered the top ten of the Critérium du Dauphiné for the first time in his career.
The 108th edition of the Pink Race, whose complete route will be unveiled next week in Rome, will start from Albania, the first Balkan country in 29 years to host the Grand Start. In total, three stages will be held, including an individual time trial of 14 km through the streets of the capital Tirana.
"I am very happy to race the Giro, which occupies a special place in my heart. It is the race that helped me make a name for myself as a rider. In 2015 I won two stages and finished third in the general classification: the stage I won on the Mortirolo with the finish in Aprica is still one of my most beautiful memories. It will be a challenge, because there will be many good riders at the start, but I will do my best to fight for a stage victory and a good result in the general classification. I can't wait for May to arrive and to meet again the incredible Italian fans who make the Giro one of the best races in the world," said Landa, who in March will begin his 15th season as a professional on the picturesque white roads of Strade Bianche.
