OSCAR TUTTOBICI. TOMORROW THE GREAT CELEBRATION, ON STAGE THE BEST OF ITALIAN CYCLING

TUTTOBICI | 27/11/2024 | 08:40
di Paolo Broggi
And there are thirty. Thirty editions of the tuttoBICI Oscar, thirty organized evenings, thirty lists of champions to invite, applaud, pamper, and award. Champions, a word not chosen by chance: all those who have won the Oscar are champions, regardless of whether their competitive history reached the top or stopped at youth categories.
An adventure, that of the Oscars, born with this magazine, in the spring of 1995: the first issue brings with it the idea of establishing an award linked to the publication, and the choice fell on the junior category to emphasize the propensity for youth cycling that tuttoBICI has always had: first edition won by Valentino China and then from the following year the family grows exponentially, opening to all male categories and elite and junior women. In 2005 wide space for young girls and beginners, in 2009 the creation of the Oscar reserved for the best technician of the season and finally in 2018 the choice to award also the best young professional, with the White Jersey Oscar, a universal symbol in all major stage races.
On the stage of our festival, 159 men and 46 women have climbed so far: more than 200 faces, names, stories that have characterized thirty years of Italian cycling. Numbers to be updated on the next November 28th, on the occasion of the gala evening that will take place, as is now tradition, in Milan. There will be eight new faces, while four champions will return to the Oscar stage to which, evidently, they are attached...
FIRST TIME. Even in a long story, such as that of the tuttoBICI Oscars, there can be firsts, and in this 2024 we are facing one of these: it had never happened before that the same rider would win the Oscar both as best professional and best young rider. Breaking the taboo is Jonathan MILAN, a Friulian giant who has just turned 24 and celebrated his birthday by signing an extraordinary world record in pursuit. But the eleven victories he achieved this year, seven of which in WorldTour category races, and the cyclamen jersey won at the Giro d'Italia, have earned him the Oscar. At the Oscar Night, Milan will receive the award as best pro and the one for the best young rider of the season.
RECORD. There is also room for a new record in this edition of our award: Elisa LONGO BORGHINI will be proclaimed queen of Italian women's cycling for the seventh time and will thus equal the record - which just a few years ago seemed unattainable - of Fabiana Luperini. After a difficult season, the extraordinary Piedmontese champion has returned to the podium of the world ranking, has collected a series of triumphs, and will take home the Oscar as well as - spoiler alert - a new tuttoBICI cover.
COMEBACK. Along with Elisa Longo Borghini, there are four more returns to the tuttoBICI Oscar stage. The Italian champion Edoardo ZAMPERINI (Trevigiani Energiapura), won the title in the Under 23 category and curiously will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Giosuè Epis by joining the Devo formation of Arkea B&B Hotels. The Veronese had already won the Oscar in 2019 among the Juniors.
Chantal PEGOLO also returns, who won in the Junior Women category and repeats the success she had achieved in 2022 among the Juniors. Who instead... wastes no time is Riccardo LONGO from Team Serio, who dominated among the first-year Beginners in 2023 and did the same among the second-year Beginners in 2024. The fourth return will occur... for the fourth time: Marco VILLA, in fact, was chosen by our readers and an expert jury as the best coach of the season after the consecutive hat-trick signed from 2020 to 2022.
IRIDE. A special emotion will certainly be given to us by Lorenzo Mark FINN, who won in the Junior category and will bring his world champion jersey to the Oscar Night stage, conquered in Zurich thanks to a splendid solo action that has given great hopes to the entire Italian cycling movement that is looking for its champions of tomorrow.
The Ligurian rider, who was already part of the Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe youth team this year, will continue his growth in the newly formed under-23 team of the German company that has definitely enriched its youth project.
VENETO AND LOMBARDY. Speaking of young talents, applause goes to the Venetian Lorenzo CAMPAGNOLO from Borgo Molino Vigna Fiorita, who emerged victorious among the Juniors, and to his fellow regional rider Carlo CECCARELLO (Asd Monselice), first among the first-year Beginners, those of the 2011 class.
Two and a half Oscars... go home to Lombardy thanks to the Mantuan (Vc Sovico) among the Juniors and the Bergamo native from MBH Bank Colpack Ballan CSB among the Elites. The... "half" Oscar is signed by the Junior who is from Piedmont but races for the Lombard Sc Cesano Maderno.
Twelve champions, twelve talents, twelve young men ready to celebrate their achievements and write a new page - whether small or big, only time will tell - in the history of the tuttoBICI Oscar. A beautiful story.
