EVENEPOEL AND NGONGE. FROM ANDERLECHT TO SUCCESS, A FRIENDSHIP STORY

Friendships that are born in childhood and often on playing fields are perhaps the strongest and most memorable for life. This is also true for Remco Evenepoel, who wanted to send a special video message to a Napoli player.
We're talking about striker Cyril Ngonge, a Belgian born in 2000 who has been playing for Napoli this year, as well as for the Belgian national team. Ngonge and Remco Evenepoel know each other well and when they were young boys they used to play football together. Their bond was so strong that Cyril Ngonge would often sleep at Evenepoel's house.
Today, these two athletes' paths have diverged and Evenepoel no longer plays football and has become a champion in road cycling. But that strong relationship born in childhood has remained unchanged, so much so that Remco Evenepoel wanted to congratulate Cyril Ngonge on becoming a Napoli player.
«Hey, Cirilou! How are you? – Evenepoel began in his message – I'm sending you this message just to tell you that I'm very proud of you. Those great performances at Napoli and with the Red Devils are the things we used to dream about together. I'm happy that you've realized that dream we had as children. I hope to see you soon. Maybe in Italy? When I have a race nearby? Or I'll come and watch one of your matches. Say hello to your family. I think they will also be very proud of you, just like my entire family is».
Evenepoel has an explosive character and when he cares about someone, he always demonstrates his affection and closeness with extreme enthusiasm. We saw this a few years ago, when he dedicated his victory to his teammate Fabio Jakobsen when he was hospitalized in serious condition after a fall in the Tour of Poland. And we saw him stop beside Gilbert during the World Championship in Yorkshire, encouraging him not to stop and to restart. Evenepoel and Ngonge played together in Anderlecht's youth teams, then one went to Club Bruges and the other left football to ride a bike.
Ngonge was moved when he saw his friend's message and his response came immediately. «It's incredible. Really incredible. This makes me feel truly many emotions. Remco meant a lot to me – Ngonge explained - We were almost always on the same team, until he moved to PSV's youth team. As children, we were very close and sometimes I would sleep at his house. So I also have a good relationship with his parents. It's nice to know that he still follows me, just as I follow him. It's also nice to see what he has managed to do in cycling. The way he is changing the sport and how he is becoming one of the greatest riders. He already had that mental strength when he was still a football player. But managing to do so much in another sport is unique. I can only feel respect for such a great man. I hope to be able to meet him soon».
