Secondo successo alla Vuelta a Espana 2026 per Matthew Brennan. Perfettamente lanciato da Cristophe Laporte e Wout van Aert, il giovane britannico della Visma Lease a Bike, già a segno tre giorni fa a Manosque, ha siglato la doppietta personale nella corsa a tappe spagnola vincendo in volata la Falset. Costa Daurada-Roquetes. Terres de l'Ebre di 173,3 chilometri davanti a Jordi Meeus (Red Bull BORA hansgrohe), Vincenzo Albanese (EF Education-Easypost) e Alessandro Romele (XDS Astana).

Nessun problema per il leader della generale, a punti e a pois Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) che concludendo in sicurezza in gruppo ha confermato la sua leadership nelle tre graduatorie alla vigilia di una tappa, la Alcossebre-Castelló di 177,4 chilometri, che con il prima categoria del Puerto del Bartolo (sterrato nel finale) a 20 chilometri dalla conclusione potrebbe nuovamente vedere in azione tanto lui quanto i suoi primi inseguitori in classifica.

LA CORSA

Dato il via alla tappa con leggero ritardo sulla tabella di marcia a causa dei problemi meccanici di alcuni atleti nel tratto di trasferimento, a prendere immediatamente il largo è Fredrik Dversnes. Il norvegese della Uno-X Mobility, vincitore della tappa di Milano all’ultimo Giro d’Italia, viene raggiunto dopo poco da Mattia Gaffuri (Picnic Postnl), Diego Uriarte (Kern Pharma), Walter Calzoni e Stefan Küng (Tudor) con lo svizzero però che, a causa di un guaio alla sua bicicletta, è costretto ad abbandonare dopo poco la compagnia dei quattro facendosi riprendere dal gruppo.

Quest’ultimo, anche complice la minaccia del vento e di possibili ventagli, non lascia però molto spazio al drappello al comando che, raggiunto un vantaggio massimo di 2’20”, viene controllato da vicino per diversi chilometri prima di essere definitivamente riassorbito a 98 km dall’arrivo sull’onda di un’accelerazione prodotta dalla Netcompany INEOS.

Tale cambio di ritmo porta alcuni uomini (fra cui Ethan Hayter, Lorenzo Fortunato e Jesus Herrada) a perdere contatto per un breve tratto ma, approfittando di un segmento con vento favorevole, tutti gli elementi rimasti attardati ritrovano la coda del plotone. A questo punto, su impulso della Visma Lease a Bike, si procede compatti e ad andatura sostenuta fino a una decina di chilometri dal traguardo volante di Tiveys quando Hayter allunga da solo per far suoi i 20 punti in palio.

Riuscito in questo intento, il britannico della Soudal Quick-Step torna nei ranghi e il plotone prosegue senza sussulti fino a 43 chilometri dall’arrivo e, in particolare, allo scatto di Andreas Kron (Uno-X Mobility) che, su una delle tante salitelle inserite negli ultimi 50 chilometri del tracciato, tenta una coraggiosa sortita solitaria. Guadagnati a 50 secondi, il danese riesce a stare in avanscoperta fino all’imbocco dell’unico GPM di giornata quando il plotone, grazie al violento cambio di ritmo inscenato nei chilometri precedenti, gli piomba addosso.

Sul Puerto de Paüls, a parte il cedimento di alcuni uomini nelle retrovie, non accade nulla di significativo e questo fa sì che, nonostante qualche temerario attacco, un gruppo non perfettamente compatto vada a giocarsi il successo di tappa in volata. Qui, sul rettilineo in leggera salita di Roquetes, a trovare l’attimo giusto per lasciarsi tutti alle spalle è ancora Matthew Brennan che, perfettamente lanciato da Laporte e van Aert, non ha difficoltà a chiudere davanti a Meeus, Albanese e Romele.

Per il classe 2005 di Darlington, passato professionista appena lo scorso anno, fanno così nove affermazioni stagionali e ventuno in carriera tra i grandi del pedale i quali, nei prossimi giorni, potrebbero nuovamente esser costretti ad ammirarne alle spalle nuovi trionfi visto lo scintillante stato di forma con cui si è presentato al via del terzo Grande Giro dell’anno.
