An Australian who goes fast for a team that wants to continue growing and climbing the rankings. Australian sprinter Sam Welsford will race in the colors of Team Jayco AlUla after signing a two-year contract.
The thirty-year-old from Perth boasts 13 professional victories, seven of which at the Tour Down Under. He is also an Olympic gold medalist on the track, having won the team pursuit in Paris alongside those who will become his teammates in the squad, Kell O'Brien and Oliver Bleddyn.
Welsford joins a long list of high-level Australian sprinters who have raced for GreenEDGE Cycling since its founding in 2012: he aims to enrich his palmares after joining the WorldTour group only in 2022.
"I'm really excited to join Team Jayco AlUla next season. After five years of racing at the highest levels, I feel it's the right time to come back home and become part of an Australian team with such an important history in this sport. I can't wait to put my experience at the team's disposal, to continue growing and, most importantly, to race for a reality that feels very close to home. I'm really motivated to discover what we can achieve together and proud to represent Australia on the world stage".
Gene Bates, Performance Manager of Jayco AlUla, adds: "Sam comes from Netcompany-INEOS and in the past we came very close to having him in the squad; it's really fantastic that we managed to close the deal and have him in our roster for the next two seasons. Sam is a well-known figure to the staff and riders, having raced for years with the Australian national track team. We can't wait to work with him and to enhance his road racing skills, as he is now focusing on this discipline and on sprinting. He will bring great motivation to the group and his presence will allow us to target important projects for 2027 and 2028."
