Valtellina is preparing to welcome the Grand Départ of the Tour de Suisse which, starting from June 16th, with the presentation in Piazza Garibaldi at 5:00 PM, will peacefully invade the roads of the Province of Sondrio. The following day, June 17th, a double stage is scheduled: in the morning the women's race (9:20 AM-12:15 PM) and in the afternoon the men's race (2:20 PM-5:45 PM).
CHAMPIONS: The roster of participants is extremely rich and qualified, starting with Slovenians Tadej Pogačar (4 Tour de France, 1 Giro d'Italia) and Primož Roglič (4 Vuelta España, 1 Giro d'Italia), British Tom Pidcock (2 Olympic golds) and Dutch Mathieu van der Poel (8 monument classics and one world title). In recent hours, however, there have been further prestigious confirmations such as Tokyo Olympic champion Richard Carapaz, Portuguese Afonso Eulálio (8 days in the pink jersey at the Giro and winner of the white jersey), Belgians Arnaud De Lie and Jasper Philipsen, Italians Alberto Bettiol, Antonio Tiberi and Andrea Bagioli (from Valtellina). Among the Swiss, national champion Mauro Schmid and Poschiavo native Matteo Badilatti. 5 of the world's top 11 are confirmed.
In the women's race, the winner of the 2026 Giro d'Italia Women (and the 2023 Tour and 2024 Vuelta), Demi Vollering, Swiss Marlen Reusser (2025 world time trial champion), the 2024 Tour de France winner Kasia Niewiadoma and Lotte Kopecky (2 world road race titles), Elisa Longo Borghini (2 Giri Women) are currently the most prominent names, but other confirmations are arriving in the coming hours. Currently 6 of the world's top 10 female athletes are entered. Also at the start is Urska Žigart, Pogačar's partner.
AMBASSADOR: An important moment will also be given by the presence of Arianna Fontana, the Italian athlete with the most Olympic medals in Italy for both winter and summer editions. The Italian champion, also a major protagonist at Milano Cortina with 3 medals, will be featured in several moments including one reserved for the press at 11 AM on June 17th at the Hotel della Posta in Sondrio.
STATEMENTS: The territory is ready, as stated by the President of the Province of Sondrio, Davide Menegola: "Valtellina is ready and has worked professionally to arrive prepared for this challenge which is increasingly assuming absolute sporting weight, and this can only make us proud. After the Olympic spectacle, we now enjoy the cycling season which for our province is increasingly at the center of the territorial development project".
The voice of Lombardy Region: "The Tour de Suisse is one of the most prestigious cycling competitions in the world. The choice of Sondrio, in Valtellina, as the start and finish confirms Lombardy's role as a stage for sporting events of global significance. Valtellina has always been the symbolic territory of the Giro d'Italia, thanks to its three legendary climbs — Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo — which have decided Giros and created cycling myths. After hosting the skiing events of the Milano Cortina Olympics, Valtellina returns to the center of the international stage: this time with cycling, which here finds one of its most iconic natural theaters".
This is stated by Federica Picchi, Undersecretary for Sport and Youth of Lombardy Region, who extended greetings to President Davide Menegola and also to Olympic champion Arianna Fontana, who, she concluded, "is herself a symbol of sporting excellence in Valtellina and Lombardy".
