An unexpected name emerges in the sixth stage of the Tour of Japan 2026. After seven days of racing dominated by riders from two teams (Team UKYO and Solution Tech NIPPO Rali), it was the young Australian from CCACHE x BODYWRAP Oscar Gallagher who surprised everyone on the Hashimoto Park-Toriihara Park route of 108.8 kilometers, managing to showcase his track cycling skills in the final winding meters and thus crossing the finish line ahead of Leonel Quintero (Victoire Hiroshima) and Tilen Finkšt (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali).
Already third in Inabe and fourth in Shinshu Iida, for the 2006-born rider from Wheelers Hill (previously known only for his results on the track at youth level in his continent), this was his first-ever road victory, a result that was far from certain given the competitors he was facing and, above all, the very open and competitive nature of the final kilometers.
Once the breakaway riders were caught (the points classification leader Tommaso Dati and Federico Iacomoni from Team UKYO, Tommaso Nencini from Solution Tech NIPPO Rali, Nils Sinschek and Yikui Niu from Li Ning Star, Atsushi Oka from Astemo Utsunomiya Blitzen, Haruhi Honda from VC Fukuoka, Elliott Schultz from Victoire Hiroshima, Hijiri Oda from Aisan Racing Team, Francesco Carolo and Giacomo Garavaglia from Swatt Club), during the final of seven laps of the finishing circuit, five riders attacked and then, less than 4 kilometers from the finish, Zeb Kyffin (Terengganu Cycling Team) and Masaki Yamamoto (VC Fukuoka) went clear. These two were only caught inside the final kilometer when the group prepared for a sprint that, with the finish on a slight climb, rewarded Gallagher's freshness and explosive speed as he launched his attack well before the 200-meter mark.
In the general classification, no problems for Matteo Fabbro (Solution Tech NIPPO Rali) who, despite losing 5 seconds at the finish line, remained in command of the overall standings, maintaining over 50 seconds on his teammate Bonneu and Benjamin Prades (VC Fukuoka), who were respectively second and third in yesterday's stage that finished on Mount Fuji.
