Three-time world champion Oscar Freire was arrested last Sunday after being reported by his wife for alleged domestic abuse, including assault, threats, harassment and intimidation.
His wife, as reported by "El Mundo", went to the Guardia Civil station in Torrelavega on Sunday around 2:00 PM to report the former cyclist, with whom she has three children (two of whom are minors). The two are in the process of divorcing and have not lived together since November 2025.
According to her testimony, contained in a police report to which Europa Press had access, disagreements between the two began in 2023, 20 years after their marriage, although the woman claims that the former cyclist "has always been very possessive during the relationship," a behavior she considered "normal."
Among the incidents cited, one dating back to September 2025, in which, during a heated argument, Freire allegedly violently snatched her phone while she was trying to call the former cyclist's brother, smashing it on the floor and destroying it.
In her account, she also described what happened during a quarrel in the early morning hours, in which he allegedly began destroying furniture in the house they still shared in Mijares (Santillana del Mar), including a canvas from which he tore out a photograph of her. Turning to her, he allegedly said: "This is what you want," and threw the photograph in her face. The couple's children were in the house during this episode.
Beyond this, there are other incidents in which the former cyclist allegedly insulted her, made degrading comments about her appearance, and threatened to "make her life hell," leave her "without a penny," and even said she would lose custody of her children.
The woman also stated that her husband was leading a "double life" for two years, having relationships with other women. The last argument she describes occurred last Sunday around noon, during Mass at the church in Puente San Miguel. As she headed toward the church, he also entered. Although they initially sat in separate pews, he moved and sat next to her.
This sparked a discussion. She allegedly told him that this was not the right place and stood up to leave, but Freire allegedly grabbed her "forcefully," forcing her to sit back down with him.
She managed to stand up again, exit the church and reach the street. When she allegedly tried to call the former cyclist's brother, he allegedly snatched her phone from her hand, then returned it to her. According to her account, this happened "in front of many people."
Less than two hours later, the woman went to the Guardia Civil to report Freire, who was arrested around 7:00 PM. He exercised his right to remain silent.
Following the report and Freire's arrest, a summary trial was held last Monday at the Civil Section and Preliminary Investigation of the Court of First Instance in Torrelavega, Courtroom Number 5. The woman appeared in court accompanied by her lawyer, María Mendieta, to give her statement.
