All-Dutch podium in the opening stage of the Metec Olympia's Tour, a .2 category race that today, in the inaugural 155.7-kilometer stage with start and finish in the town of Alkmaar, saw the rider from Roy Metec - SOLARWATT p/b Mantel Hoogendoorn take the victory.
The 2001-born rider from Boskoop, already third at the Ronde van Oud-Vossemeer and first at the Dorpenomloop Dwars door Drenthe (both national races), prevailed in the sprint over his compatriots Ed Uptegrove (EEW-VDK Cyclingteam) and David Dekker (BEAT CC p/b Saxo), who like him managed to contest the finish of a stage characterized, as is customary in these parts, by wind, crashes, and great nervousness.
By controlling the group of fifteen athletes who came to contest the first partial success, Hoogendoorn also secured the first leader's jersey of the general classification, a title he will attempt to defend tomorrow in the short 10.9-kilometer individual time trial that, in Bellum, should give a more defined shape to the standings.
Unfortunately, six of the ten Italians who started this morning will certainly not be taking part in the time trial, as Kevin Bertoncelli, Andrea Scarso, Samuele Alari, Lorenzo Ursella, Davide Boscaro (S.C. Padovani Polo Cherry Bank), Gabriele Scagliola (Lidl - Trek Future Racing) and Bryan Olivo (SWATT Club) all withdrew during today's race.
