The cry of victory at the Cittiglio finish line belongs to a Dutch rider, as Karlijn Swinkels of UAE Team ADQ claimed the honours at the 27th Trofeo Binda, outsprinting her breakaway companions Anna Van Der Breggen (SD Worx Protime) and Mie Ottestad (Uno-X Mobility). The best-placed Italian was Letizia Borghesi, who crossed the line in fifth position.
The decisive move came during the final lap, when three UAE Team ADQ riders (Swinkels, Persico and Gasparrini) and Anna Van der Breggen set a pace on the Orino climb that their rivals could not match.
THE RACE. A difficult race marked by poor weather conditions, particularly the low temperatures that troubled many of the riders. Snow on the Brizio climb, which had fallen overnight, forced the organizers to modify the course and reduce the distance to 152.7 km.
In the early stages, German rider Hannah Ludwig (Team Cofidis) launched an attack and managed to build a lead of up to 1'45" over the main group, which was consistently controlled by UAE Team ADQ. The team of Italian champion Elisa Longo Borghini took charge of managing the race and whittling down the peloton, with the champion herself playing an active role.
The race exploded during the penultimate lap, right after cresting the Orino climb. On the descent, Silvia Persico delivered a sharp acceleration that split the group, leaving around ten riders ahead who managed to extend their advantage. Anna Van der Breggen (SD Worx Pro Time) was certainly the most aggressive and launched an attack on the final climb of the day, with only Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ) and Mie Bjorndal Ottestad (Uno-X) able to follow her wheel.
On the Cittiglio straightaway, Swinkels unleashed her sprinting power and beat Van Der Breggen and Ottestad, securing her first victory in a World Tour race.
