Letizia Borghesi (27 years old), rider for AG Insurance - Soudal Team, after a good start to the season today in Siena wanted to make an important mark, but the girl from Cles was unable to celebrate and be happy about her race, because an error by the lead motorcycle ahead of her took her and other cyclists off the correct route. In the strong group of about thirty riders were also Vollering, Van der Breggen and Kopecky, and they all followed the motorcycle, ending up in front of a family's house, who watched the athletes in astonishment.
"It didn't go well because first I went straight into a corner because an athlete couldn't turn due to a puncture and then, when I was getting back in with Kim (Le Court Pienaar, ed.) I was at the head of the group in the gravel descent sector, but the motorcycle ahead of me went in the wrong direction, and obviously going downhill I followed the motorcycle like the others did, but we were on the wrong road".
Letizia Borghesi burst into tears after crossing the finish line and her teammates surrounded her trying to console her. "It's not fair. I just followed the motorcycle with the others and we took the wrong route".
A small group of cyclists followed the motorcycle, which turned right at a fork, taking a gravel road that passed in front of a house, with people who saw the group of athletes stop and turn back. "We found ourselves where we shouldn't have been and then the motorcycle even turned around and didn't even wait for me, so I was left alone in the middle of the Siena countryside".
From that moment on, everything became difficult for Letizia Borghesi and discouragement immediately set in. "From that moment I never got back in, that was the problem. I understood it was all over. I fought with myself and finished the race, but out of anger I wanted to stop and didn't want to continue anymore, because it's not possible for something like this to happen in such an important race, because it ruined my performance and the team's performance".
Letizia Borghesi arrived in Siena in excellent physical condition, but this error didn't allow her to race as she would have wanted. "I don't understand why these things happen. Nobody on the radio communicated to us what was going on. I definitely know I have an excellent base and I felt really good. Until that error I was never at my limit and I was really excited about the finish and it's frustrating because, when you feel this good, you want to bring something home and it's really difficult to accept all of this. I want to thank my teammates who were so close to me".
