The newly established Tour of Shanghai opened under the banner of Cristian David Pita. The short Chinese stage race, a category .2 event added to the calendar this year, saw the Ecuadorian sprinter shine in the first of the three stages, skillfully sprinting past Dusan Rajovic (Team Solution Tech - Vini Fantini) and Jesper Rasch (Parkhotel Valkenburg).
The stage, just 95.3 kilometers long, was characterized for a long time by the breakaway of Yukiya Arashiro (Team Solution Tech - Vini Fantini), Luke Mudgway, and Simon Pellaud (both from Li Ning Star), who remained in the lead until about ten kilometers from the finish line. They were able to contest the intermediate sprint bonuses that, at the end of the stage, allowed them to position themselves at the top of the general classification led by the South American from the Huansheng-Vonoa-Taishan Sport Team.
Best Italian at the finish line was Alessandro Perracchione (16th) from the Team Novo Nordisk, one of the three ProTeam formations that lined up at the start of the event.
