Francesco Lonardi narrowly missed victory in the 92nd edition of the Monza City Gold Medal race held yesterday on the Monza National Autodrome circuit. The Verona rider from the Team Rime Drali crossed the finish line behind winner Cristian Fantini (Solme Olmo) and ahead of Riccardo Barbuto (Ciclistica Rostese). In the sprint that decided the historic Brianza competition, Andrea Rinaldi's placement is also worth noting: the Bergamo rider finished ninth after winning an intermediate sprint.
Beyond the two important placements, what made sports director Gabriele Rampollo proud was the team's performance throughout the entire 116-kilometer race. "The guys were absolute protagonists, they attacked and were always in the thick of the race. They animated all the day's breakaways, first with Luca Rinaldi, then with Francesco Sangalli and Tommaso Daniel (winner of two Intermediate Sprints, ed.). In the end, Francesco Lonardi's near victory and Andrea's placement were the cherry on top of a truly memorable Sunday," the coach of the Brescia team declared after the race.
