DENNIS CASE. THE FORMER PROFESSOR PLEADS GUILTY TO DANGEROUS DRIVING AND HEADS TOWARDS A PLEA BARGAIN: RISKS 7 YEARS IN PRISON
JUSTICE | 24/01/2025 | 11:32 di Francesca Monzone The former world time trial champion Rohan Dennis returned to court, in the Italian night, and in front of the Adelaide District Court formally pleaded guilty to dangerous driving aggravated by the awareness of potentially causing damage in the case concerning the death of his wife, cyclist Melissa Hoskins. The Australian newspaper The Advertiser reports the legal facts, stating that Rohan Dennis appeared at the Adelaide court for a preliminary plea bargaining hearing for the events that occurred on December 30, 2023, when he hit his wife Melissa with his car, causing her death a few hours later in the hospital due to the injuries sustained. Dennis pleaded guilty through his lawyers, as he did not speak during this hearing: his attorneys explained that their client admitted to driving a vehicle without a legitimate reason while his wife Melissa was near the vehicle, knowing that this act could cause harm to another person and being recklessly indifferent to the fact that such damage would be caused. It is believed that the tragedy occurred following a domestic dispute between the two spouses and that Melissa would have initially jumped onto the hood of the family's dark gray Volkswagen Amarok while Dennis was trying to leave home. Surveillance cameras then captured her running alongside the vehicle before being run over and injured after reaching out towards a door handle. In the end, the former Australian cyclist was charged with three counts: dangerous driving, reckless driving, and endangering human lives resulting in death. The maximum sentence is 15 years in prison and 10 years of driver's license suspension, but the lawyers are seeking a plea bargain to reach a maximum sentence of 7 years. In the hearing on December 10, 2024, Dennis's lawyer, Jane Abbey KC, had proposed an agreement to the prosecutors provided that the murder charge was withdrawn, confirming that Dennis would plead guilty to the aggravated charge of creating a risk of harm due to an unconscious action. The next hearing is scheduled for April 14: the court will hear Dennis's statements on that occasion.
