TIMOTHEE CHALAMET SURPRISES EVERYONE: CYCLING ON THE RED CARPET

Timothee Chalamet is undoubtedly the actor of the moment, with an Oscar nomination and four Golden Globe nominations; he has played iconic roles like the young Willy Wonka or Paul Atreides, the protagonist of Denis Villeneuve's Dune saga. Talented and loved by young audiences, the twenty-nine-year-old American is increasingly at the center of media attention for his charisma and naturalness, but also for his very particular actions. The latest? Literally arriving on the red carpet by bicycle.

These days, the American actor is busy promoting the film "A Complete Unknown" in which he plays a very young Bob Dylan, and on Tuesday during the London premiere, he arrived on the red carpet riding a rental bicycle. No sportswear, but his unexpected entrance certainly generated general surprise. Chalamet arrived with a slightly muddy electric bike, parked it, ended the rental from his mobile phone, and then posed in front of the film's poster as if nothing had happened. Photos and videos captured the moment, generating fan euphoria that immediately recalled "Call Me by Your Name", the 2017 film directed by Luca Guadagnino that made him famous with the general public. The film is set in Italy, in Mantua, and Elio Perlman, the character played by Chalamet, often wanders through sunny countryside on a bicycle. These scenes have become so iconic that they have created actual guided tours where it's possible to follow a film location route with bicycles available for rent.

It's not the first time an actor has appeared on the red carpet, rejecting the famous limousine. Tom Cruise, for example, has gotten us used to all kinds of entrances. To promote the Mission Impossible saga, he arrived by boat, motorcycle, and even landed directly by helicopter at the Top Gun Maverick premiere. To find another iconic bicycle moment, however, we must go back to 2023 when David Byrne, the Talking Heads frontman, appeared at the traditional Met Gala with his city bicycle. The event's theme was a tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, but Byrne had decided not only to remember the famous designer but also to promote the importance of physical activity and certainly to attract attention.

Timothee Chalamet in "pedaling mode" quickly went viral worldwide; videos circulating on social media show him cycling through London's streets towards the red carpet, and amid the euphoria, various hypotheses began to circulate, including the unlikely one that it was a makeshift means of transportation found at the moment to avoid being late. Many speculated that it was a tribute to Bob Dylan's motorcycle, reimagined in a sustainable version, a way to raise awareness about environmental preservation, to which the actor is very connected. Others, however, saw it as nothing more than a publicity stunt for the famous bike-sharing app, given that the star's outfit was immaculate and he has never actually declared himself a bicycle enthusiast. Sponsored or not, this unusual entrance generated comments, memes, and the desire to replicate the actor's gesture, once again drawing attention to the importance of bicycles and their immense power to promote sustainable mobility.
