THE 1986 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STORY
On September 6th, 1986, in Colorado Springs (United States), Moreno Argentin won the road cycling world championship title, giving Italy the rainbow jersey after Joop Zoetemelk's success the previous year.
The race, which was 261.8 km long, took place on a very challenging high-altitude course with numerous climbs. Argentin proved to be the strongest and most attentive in the decisive moments. In the final, he remained in command with Frenchman Charly Mottet and beat him decisively in a two-man sprint. Behind them the group arrived just a few seconds later and the sprint for bronze was won by Giuseppe Saronni, thus completing a splendid day for Italian cycling.
Moreno Argentin finished ahead of Frenchman Charly Mottet (France) and Giuseppe Saronni who arrived 9 seconds back. That title represents the highest point of Argentin's career. Already bronze medalist at the 1985 World Championship, the Veneto rider confirmed his extraordinary value in one-day races, becoming one of the great specialists of the classics of the 1980s.
